A Vision Towards Conservation
Maine governor recognizes a large land donation as part of the Great Brook Preserve Project.

Newry, ME – Governor John Baldacci recently spoke at Sunday River’s Grand Summit Hotel on several key topics including research & development, technology and education to a group of local constituents and members of the local business community.  During his speech, Governor Baldacci also acknowledged a large land donation from Great Brook Preserve, a new residential development in Newry to the Western Maine Charitable Foundation.

Governor Baldacci affirmed that “this is exactly the type of land development that the state of Maine needs.”
“It is great to see that hundreds of acres of land have been donated for preservation in perpetuity.” Great Brook Preserve’s developer, LandSource, LLC donated over 500 acres.

Of the original 8,700 acres purchased by the developer, only 6% is being developed.  After selling a large tract, the developer has donated hundreds of acres to the conservation land trust. The land has been deeded to a non-profit land trust, Western Maine Charitable Foundation. This donation plays a very important role in a large scale conservation effort in the state of Maine.

David Herring, the Executive Director representing the foundation indicates that "This several-hundred acre donation of land is a critical link for Western Mountains Foundation into Newry from the north/east and links our corridor to the Outward Bound L.L. Bean Mountain Center.”  Mr. Herring adds “It is a very important piece of land for us and moves us one step closer to achieving our objective of conserving a 180-mile corridor from Rockwood to the Newry area and building and operating a hut and trail system."

Dave Verani of LandSource, LLC says that “this is about delivering on a project that we can be proud of for many generations.  In the land development world you can leave your mark in many different ways. We feel that Great Brook Preserve is an example of the right way. We are very proud of what this represents for the state of Maine, our customers and for our legacy as a company.”  Mr. Verani adds “We are talking about a premium land donation with land that could have been very marketable with incredible views of the Mahoosuc Mountain Range, Sunday River Ski Resort, streams and waterfalls that will be accessible as great hiking, cross country skiing, snowmobile and fishing venues.”

Jeff Bailey also of LandSource, LLC mentioned that “we are about to launch Great Brook Preserve in the Sunday River, Maine area, and this project is attracting an evolving group of customers that are strong environmental advocates and also are seeking premium quality for primary, secondary or retirement homes.”
